Call for Participants

GENERAL INFORMATION

*Venue

The Symposium will take place in Recreation Center in Koscielisko (about 20 minutes within walking distance from the center of Zakopane).

Registration fees from outside Poland are to be paid in US dollars only. At site you can pay in cash (also in Polish currency 'zloty') or by major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, EuroCard, Access or Diners Club). However, paying by card you will be charged additional 5 % of bank commission.

Paying by cash you pay in Polish currency, the amount based on the present exchange rate.

If you have transferred money, please take a copy of the bank transfer form with you, unless you received from us a confirmation of your payment.

*Cancellation

Cancellation received later than May 15 will be charged US$ 100 handling fee. After June 1 cancellation will not be accepted.

*Accommodation

A number of single and double rooms have been reserved - all of them are with bath or shower.

Please indicate your accommodation preferences completing the Registration and Accommodation Form.

*Transportation

Zakopane is a small town which is situated in the south of Poland, in Tatras montains. It is reachable from Warsaw by train or by coach (and Warsaw is easily reachable from all parts of the world and by all means of transportation).

If you prefer travelling by train we can help you with buying train tickets from Warsaw to Zakopane and hiring shuttle bus to Koscielisko. The cost of single (= one way) ticket depends on the type of train; the early morning train (called "Tatry") costs about 50 new zloties (20 US$); shuttle bus about 1,25 new zloties (0,5 US$).

We can arrange a special coach (or coaches) from Warsaw to Zakopane-Koscielisko and from Zakopane to Warsaw. The cost of:

single (= one way) ticket is approximately 50 new zloties (20 US$),
return ticket is approximately 100 new zloties (40 US$).

We can also arrange for you a trip from Zakopane to Warsaw through Cracow (sightseeing and lunch included) on Thursday, June 13 (after closing session). The cost is approximately 100 new zloties (60 US$) a person.

*Visas

Citizens of the USA and most European countries do not need any visa. Please check with your local Polish consulate if you need a visa.

*Registration Desk

The Registration Desk will be located in Recreation Center "KOSCIELISKO" and will be open on Sunday 9th of June, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Monday 10th of Hune from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding breaks for breakfast, lunches and dinners).

*Polish Currency

Polish currency units are ZLOTY (PZL) and GROSZ (1 grosz = 1/100 zloty).

From 1st January 1995 we have new zloty and the old one as well. One new zloty is equal to ten thousand old zloty. You can find prices in new zloty or in thousands of old zloty. In most situations two prices are given.

All coins are new. There are the following coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 groszy and 1, 2, 5 zloty (recall that 1 grosz = 1/100 zloty).

There are TWO kinds of notes: new and old ones.

The new Polish zloty notes are 10, 20, 50 100, 200 zloty notes only (at present). For instance, 500 note (old zloty) is equal to 5 (new) grosz, 1 zl coin (new zloty) is equal to 10 000 old zloty.

The old Polish zloty notes are 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000, 50000, 100000, 500000, 1000000, 2000000. Notes equal and greater than 500 are all old Polish zloty. Be careful: There is a 100 old zloty note (worth less than a cent) and a 100 new zloty note (worth 40 dollars) currently in use. The difference is that

the 100 new zloty note has a king's head on it (a crowned head), but
the 100 old zloty note has a communist leader head on it (and is perfectly red on the reverse side).

*Money Exchange

In Poland one pays mainly in cash, therefore you are advised to exchange some money into Polish currency in the exchange office usually called "KANTOR", which can be found at the airport (exchange rate is about 10% worse then the average one), at the railway station, hotels, and in many other places. The current exchange rate (February 1996) is approx. 2,55 PZL for US $1.

*Climate

June in Polish mountains is changable. It is usually sunny and quite warm with average temperatures ranging from 12C - 18C. But it sometimes rains and it is rather cold.
