Prof. Dr. habil. Miroslaw Dabrowski

Director of the Institute of Computer Science
of Polish Academy of Sciences

has died on 8th October 1995.

Born on September 14th, 1937 in Dobrzyniewo Duze, He obtained His M.Sc. degree in mathematics from Warsaw University in 1961. He received Ph.D. degree in 1969 from the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. In 1975 He got habilitation. In 1986 the State Council granted Him the scientific title of professor of technical sciences in the domain of computer science.

He started His scientific career with research in the domain of numerical methods. But His major area of interest was intelligent information retrieval, including automatic indexing of documents, dictionary-free morphological and syntactical analysis of natural language (mainly Polish), automatic extraction of new technical expressions from paper titles and abstracts, classification methods of descriptors and documents, efficiency of information retrieval systems. He was also active in other closely related areas, e.g. of expert systems, neural networks. He contributed much to promotion of artificial intelligence in Poland. .

He devoted much of His passion also to organizational problems of Polish science. He founded the artificial intelligence department in the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 1984 He has been the deputy director for scientific research and since 1988 the director of the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences. For several years He was the President of Commission for International Cooperation of Academies of Sciences on Scientific Problems of Computational Technique. For many years he was the coordinator of Central Fundamental Research Programme in Computer Science. He was member of program committees of many national and international conferences, and He chaired among other the series of international Workshops on Intelligent Information Systems. He was referee of conference and journal papers, books, doctoral and habilitation dissertations in the area of computer science, and especially in artificial intelligence. He promoted the work of many young researchers.

We will remember that all His life long Prof. Dabrowski was a friendly and cheerful man, always helping people who needed help. The Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences has lost unforgettable director, and Polish science a very active researcher.
