The 21st century is to become an age of a rapid growth in the flow of electronically encoded information generated daily by industrial measurement systems, weather and other satelites, telecommunication systems, trade in hypermarkets, stock markets etc., scientists publishing their results, bisuness organizations publishing local and general macroeconomic indicators, marketing organizations widespreading their advertisements, creators of diverse Web pages, people sending e-mails.

While early information systems were predominantly oriented towards collecting more and more information, nowadays it becomes more and more important to extract the information we need from the information already collected. The wealth of data available requires much intelligence to get control over the growth of important information. Tools for both for more targetted collection of information and for speedy and accurate digesting is required.

Anticipating this development, already in 1992 the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPI PAN) has been organizing annual international workshops and symposia on intelligent information systems. Starting as an event for scientists only, the conference series evolved towards presentations of practical applications, including mechanical diagnosis in heavy industry installations and aeroplanes, decision support in choice of material and technology in the house building industry, natural language understanding in phone services of banking systems etc. However never forgetting about fundamental research as a sound basis of the applied studies.

The conferece rooms hosted not only researchers from the university and industry, but also representitives of business and politics who sought new impulses for their activities.

Scope

The current symposium covers theoretical foundations, feasibility studies, comparative studies and practical applications of intelligent information systems, and includes but it not limited to:

• Logical foundations of Intelligent Information Systems
• Machine learning, knowledge discovery in data bases, in document databases and on the Web, scientific discovery systems
• Expert systems, reasoning systems, methods of knowledge representation, knowledge engineering, integration of knowledge from multiple sources
• Neural networks, genetic and evolutionary algorithms, evolutionary computation, evolutionary strategies, ant algorithms, immune systems, other biologically inspired systems,
• Management of uncertainty, fuzzy logic, rought sets, bayesian networks, possibilistic theories, evidence theory,
• Distributed intelligent information systems, multiagent systems, cooperative request processing
• Intelligent Web robots, softbots, spiders mobile agents, organizations of mobile agents,
• Intelligent Web search engines, general and dedicated search engines
• Natural language processing, including automatic derivation of keywords, abstracts, subjects, thesauri construction in unstructured and structured (HTML etc.) texts, summarization of documents and sets of documents, feature extraction from unstructured and structured texts and from hypertext
• Intelligent information retrieval and filtering
• Security in Intelligent Information Systems
• applications in the industry, agriculture, banking, medicine, administration, education, police and military, scientific research in social and technical sciences etc.

We invite those who would like to present their newest results in theoretical and applied research, carry out demonstrations of prototypical and full-fledged commercial and non-commercial software.

We would like to invite also people from industry, business and public services interested in getting insight into newest developments in the dynamically growing area of intelligent information systems.

Selected papers from those accepted for presentation will appear in a volume of the book series: "Advances in Soft Computing" published by the Springer-Verlag group (Physica-Verlag, Heidelberg and New York).

Communications accepted will be published in the Communications volume of the conference.

Also, some of the papers can be recommended for publishing in appropriate scientific journals.

Submission

• Papers must be written in English
• Papers can be submitted in one of two categories: (i) regular papers (ii) short communications
• Regular papers should not exceed 10 A4 single-spaced pages, and short communications - 5 A4 single-spaced pages.
• You can either submit a full draft paper or instead (i) an extended abstract in case of regular papers (at least one page long) (ii) a short abstract in case of communication. The extended abstracts / short abstracts shall pinpoint the essentials of the contribution and be suffiicient for a judgement of novelty and/or practical importance of the obtained results.
• The font size should not be smaller than 10pt.
• We accept only POSTSCRIPT version of the paper. (Files readable by MS Word'97 or MS Word 2000 are also exceptionally allowed)

As soon as we receive the file, we will send a confirmation.
• Take care that we receive the copy of the submission no later than December 15th 2001 and the final paper no later than February 15th 2002.

Deadlines

• December 15th, 2001 - Submission of regular papers and short communications. THIS DEADLINE IS FIRM !!!!
• January 15th, 2002 - Program Committee decision due
• February 15th, 2002 - Final versions of papers due (the postscript must ARRIVE)
