CRIT 2 - CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The CRIT 2 project was initiated in October 1996. Like CRIT 1, CRIT 2 aims to strengthen co-operation between the Polish and EU research communities. In addition, it puts greater emphasis on the industrial relevance of the prospective results and industrial co-operation. The CRIT 2 consortium consists of two Polish and two EU partners. On the EU side: the German Research Centre for Information Technology, GMD (co-ordinator) and the Swedish Institute for Computer Science, SICS; on the Polish side: the Foundation for Polish Science, FPS (technical co-ordinator) and the Polish Information Processing Society, PIPS.

Within the framework of CRIT 2, between 10 and 15 research projects will be funded. Each submitted and eligible proposal will be evaluated in a peer review process by at least one Polish and one EU scientist. Final selection of proposals to be funded will be done by an international expert panel and submitted to the European Commission for funding decision.

On behalf of the partners of the CRIT 2 consortium, the Foundation for Polish Science and the Polish Information Processing Society in cooperation with the European Commission are pleased to announce the call for proposals for the CRIT 2 project.

The rationale and goals of the CRIT 2 call, eligibility and evaluation criteria, funding, procedures and time schedule are given below.

1. The goals of the CRIT 2 project are:
   • to promote cooperation with EU researchers and, where appropriate, between Polish teams,
   • to strengthen the industrial relevance of research,
   • to improve the willingness and eligibility of Polish research groups to participate in the R&D programmes of the European Union.
2. The eligibility criteria for participation in the CRIT 2 call for proposals are as follows:
   • The call is open to research project proposals in information and telecommunication technologies related to all subjects (domains) mentioned in the enclosed ESPRIT Workprogramme.
   • Submitted proposals shall be based on ongoing, nationally funded research projects.
3. To meet the goals of the project, submitted proposals should concentrate on:
   • extension of these issues in the initial research project with a view to seeking future partners in the ESPRIT Programme;
   • cooperation with research institutions in the European Union member states; joint projects by more than one Polish team are also welcomed;
   • possible exploitation of research results by industrial partners from Poland and/or the European Union;
4. Eligible costs to be covered from the CRIT funds are: scientific travel and workshops and other costs connected with the development of cooperation with partners in EU countries; additional personnel costs for research staff; purchase of equipment.
5. The evaluation criteria will be as follows:
   • Scientific excellence and innovativeness
   • Conformity with the subject areas covered by the ESPRIT Programme
   • European dimension of proposed research
   • Industrial relevance

Interested applicants are requested to submit their proposals on the enclosed form in four copies. The proposal should be also submitted as a file in Word 6 on a diskette in PC format. The proposal must be submitted in English.

You are also kindly requested to send, by 1 January 1997, on an enclosed form an expression of intent to submit a proposal. You may register for an information meeting using the same form. The meeting will take place on 17 January 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at the Foundation for Polish Science (address as above).

The authors of the selected proposals will be informed by 31 July 1997 about the results of the call.
